The Pioneer, The Owner
Today is a sad day for professional football fans around the globe. Lamar Hunt lost his battle with bladder cancer last night at the young age of 74. Lamar Hunt was the man who named the super bowl, the Super Bowl. He was the major founder of the original AFL and the most influential person involved in joining the AFL and the NFL into one league, a great pioneer that made football the game it is today. He cared more about competition than winning (although he wanted to win) and fought for changes until he passed on. He was responsible for the 2-point conversion being added to the NFL game, had a huge hand in the instant replay process and fought for years to get another Thanksgiving game (not in Detroit or Dallas) to be added to the Thanksgiving Day schedule. Unfortunately the year his idea finally came to fruition (with his beloved Chiefs playing in it) he was unable to attend or even watch as he was in the hospital fighting for his life. He was a very personnel centered owner, he even had his home number listed in the Dallas white pages, and was liked by everyone in the football world. He was the only owner the Chiefs have ever had and will be missed by both his family, the Chiefs organization, and football fans worldwide. Thank you Lamar for making football the greatest sport in the world, we will miss you.
